EKU Accessibility Resources

The following links to departments and resources at EKU will help you to improve accessibility of your webpages, online course content, and other digital resources.

Training Session: “Dear A11y: An Hour of Advice about Digital Accessibility”

Jennifer Perkins, instructional designer in EKU's Instructional Design Center, led a training session in March 2019 to answer common questions about digital accessibility, particularly with respect to online courses. (You may also view supporting presentation slides (PDF).)

Interactive Tutorial: “Accessibility Basics for Digital Documents”

Developed by Nedim Slijepcevic, IDC faculty development program manager, this interactive tutorial will help you make digital documents more accessible. The tutorial discusses why proper headings and styles, embedded links, alternative text for images, and well-formed tables are essential in digital documents. As you learn, you will practice the concepts via an interactive interface. This tutorial is approximately 12 minutes long.

Training Session: “Building a Digital Bridge”

Jennifer Perkins, instructional designer in EKU’s Instructional Design Center, led a 40-minute training session in October 2018 emphasizing ethical and legal reasons for making our web and digital materials accessible. The session also provided information about numerous resources that will assist you in designing inclusively. (You may also view the presentation slides so that you may link to these resources.)

Webinar: “A Little Means a Lot: Simple Ways to Improve Online Course Accessibility”

Jennifer Perkins, instructional designer in EKU’s Instructional Design Center, led this fast-paced, 45-minute webinar in March 2017. Jennifer, who has presented similar sessions at state and national conferences, offers insight on simple things that any producer of web or digital content can do to improve accessibility for all audiences. Transcription Services

EKU’s Instructional Design Center, Information Technology department, and Center for Student Accessibility offer, collaboratively, transcription services for instructors who are using video or audio files in a course but do not have captions or transcripts already available. Priority is granted to those courses where an accommodation is required, then to e-Campus courses, and then to other courses.

Center for Student Accessibility

EKU’s Center for Student Accessibility (CSA) is the office to which EKU students may request services and accommodations for disabilities. The CSA evaluates and determines eligibility, helping the University to provide equal access for all.

Read&Write

EKU has a campuswide license for Read&Write, software that helps students with literacy problems. Those with dyslexia or other learning disability, and even English Language Learners, will find Read&Write beneficial for their studies. Students may download the Read&Write software from the Information Technology webpage. Staff and faculty should contact the Information Technology help desk at (859) 622-3000. Read&Write is also available in EKU campus computer labs.

ASL Interpreting Request Form

EKU’s Department of ASL and Interpreter Education provides sign-language interpreting services for events. However, you must request such services via an Interpreting Request Form so that the request may be reviewed and evaluated.

ADAccess

EKU’s ADAccess website offers links to the institution’s web accessibility statement, information about accessibility and disability compliance, ADA Awareness Day/Month events, and other resources.

Adaptive Equipment and Computer Software

The EKU Libraries Adaptive Equipment and Computer Software webpage provides information about resources that those with disabilities may find in Crabbe Library on the main campus.
